Dr. Govinda Tandon is a prominent Nepali scholar, cultural conservationist, and historian, known for his extensive work in preserving Nepal’s cultural and religious heritage. Born on Baisakh 19, 2012 BS, in Battisputali, Kathmandu, Dr. Tandon completed his Ph.D. in “Cultural Study of Pashupati Area” from Tribhuvan University in 2045 BS. His deep-rooted knowledge in Nepali history, culture, and archaeology, alongside his active role in several heritage conservation projects, has established him as a leading figure in heritage preservation.

Cultural preservation efforts

Dr. Tandon has been actively involved in the preservation and promotion of Nepal’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage. He played a pivotal role as the Member Secretary of the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT), where he led initiatives for the restoration and preservation of the Pashupatinath Temple and its surrounding areas. His significant contribution includes drafting the Economic Regulation 2045 and Administrative Regulation 2045 of the PADT, which are still foundational to the temple’s management today.

One of his remarkable achievements was the restoration of the Ramchandra Temple in Battisputali, which had fallen into a dilapidated state. His leadership brought the ancient structure back to its former grandeur, preserving its historical and religious significance. Dr. Tandon has also been an advocate for safeguarding the Guthi System, a traditional community-based management system for temples and public assets, which he believes is essential for preserving Nepalese culture and spirituality.

Literary contributions

Dr. Tandon has authored and co-authored multiple books focusing on Nepal’s history, culture, and archaeological heritage. His notable works include “Guthi System in Nepal,” “Cultural Study of Pashupati Area,” and “Society and Nation Building through Guthi.” His writings are considered crucial resources for understanding the historical and cultural fabric of Nepal.

Educational and cultural advocacy

Besides his preservation efforts, Dr. Tandon has contributed as a lecturer at Tribhuvan University and as a cultural trainer for international volunteers in Nepal. His lectures on Nepalese culture, religion, and history have been delivered at institutions like Pitzer College in the United States, furthering global awareness of Nepal’s rich cultural heritage.

Dr. Tandon remains an influential figure in cultural preservation, actively engaging in Pashupati Heritage Conservation, temple restorations, and advocacy for the abolishment of animal sacrifices in temples. संस्कृति र सम्पदा संरक्षणका धरोहर

डा. गोविन्द टण्डन नेपालका एक प्रख्यात संस्कृतिविद्, इतिहासकार र सम्पदा संरक्षण अभियन्ता हुन्। वि.सं. २०१२ साल बैशाख १९ गते काठमाडौँको बत्तीसपुतलीमा जन्मिनुभएका टण्डनले त्रिभुवन विश्वविद्यालयबाट “पशुपतिक्षेत्रको सांस्कृतिक अध्ययन” विषयमा विद्यावारिधि (Ph.D.) गर्नुभएको छ। नेपाली इतिहास, संस्कृति तथा पुरातत्त्वको गहिरो अध्ययन र त्यसको संरक्षणमा उहाँको उल्लेखनीय योगदान छ।

डा. टण्डनले नेपालको सांस्कृतिक सम्पदाको संरक्षण र संवर्धनमा ठूलो भूमिका खेल्दै आउनुभएको छ। उहाँले पशुपतिक्षेत्र विकास कोष का सदस्य–सचिवको रुपमा पशुपतिनाथ मन्दिरको संरक्षण र त्यस क्षेत्रको व्यवस्थापनमा ऐतिहासिक योगदान पुर्याउनुभयो। उहाँकै नेतृत्वमा तयार पारिएको आर्थिक नियमावली २०४५ र प्रशासनिक नियमावली २०४५ ले अहिले पनि पशुपतिनाथ मन्दिरको व्यवस्थापनमा मार्गनिर्देशन गरिरहेको छ।

त्यस्तै, उहाँले बत्तीसपुतलीस्थित जीर्ण अवस्थामा पुगेको रामचन्द्र मन्दिर लाई पुनर्स्थापना गरी पुरातन भव्यता फर्काउन सफल हुनुभयो। यससँगै, नेपाली सांस्कृतिक परम्पराको महत्वपूर्ण अङ्गको रुपमा रहेको गुठी प्रणाली को संरक्षण र पुनर्स्थापनामा उहाँको योगदान उल्लेखनीय छ। उहाँले गुठी व्यवस्थालाई संरक्षण नगरे धार्मिक र सांस्कृतिक सम्पदा हराउने खतरा रहेको चेतावनीसमेत दिनुभएको छ।

डा. टण्डनले नेपालको इतिहास, संस्कृति र पुरातत्त्वसम्बन्धी दर्जनौँ पुस्तकहरूको लेखन र सम्पादन गर्नुभएको छ। उहाँका प्रमुख कृतिहरूमा “नेपालमा गुठी व्यवस्था,” “पशुपतिक्षेत्रको सांस्कृतिक अध्ययन,” र “समाज र राष्ट्रको उत्थानमा गुठीहरूको भूमिका” रहेका छन्। यी पुस्तकहरू नेपाली संस्कृतिको संरक्षण र संवर्धनका लागि महत्वपूर्ण दस्तावेजका रूपमा मानिन्छन्।

उहाँले त्रिभुवन विश्वविद्यालयमा इतिहास र संस्कृतिका प्राध्यापकको रूपमा अध्यापन गर्नुका साथै जापान, अमेरिका लगायतका देशका विद्यार्थीहरूलाई नेपालको धर्म र संस्कृतिबारे प्रशिक्षण दिने काम गर्नुभएको छ। उहाँले पिट्जर कलेज, अमेरिका मा नेपाली संस्कृति र सम्पदाबारे प्रवचन दिने कार्य गर्दै अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय मञ्चमा नेपालको संस्कृतिलाई चिनाउने काम पनि गर्नुभएको छ।

डा. गोविन्द टण्डनको संस्कृति संरक्षण, धार्मिक सम्पदाको जगेर्ना र गुठी व्यवस्थाको पुनर्स्थापनामा देखिएको योगदानले नेपाली समाजलाई सांस्कृतिक गर्वको भावनाले प्रेरित गराएको छ। नेपालका ऐतिहासिक र धार्मिक सम्पदाहरूको संरक्षणमा उहाँको भूमिकाले आउने पुस्तालाई पनि संस्कृति बचाउन प्रेरित गर्नेछ।
